How It Works
Cascara Sagrada
Cascara sagrada helps cleanse the colon of damaging toxins and waste. It acts as a natural herbal laxative, increasing the content of water in the bowel and stimulating the movement of the intestines to promote the emptying of the colon. The end result is that toxins spend less time in the bowel, thereby reducing the time that they can affect intestinal cells or be absorbed into the body. Cascara’s hydroxyanthracene derivatives also support the body’s detoxification processes.
Buckthorn
Buckthorn bark is a powerful herb celebrated for its ability to help loosen the bowels. Buckthorn has been used in folk medicine for centuries to help relieve occasional constipation. Buckthorn contains anthraquinones, which are responsible for its mild bowel-cleansing effect. These substances increase the content of water in the bowel and promote the movement of the intestines. Buckthorn is considered to have a similar, but milder laxative action compared to cascara. Also called alder, dogwood and arrow wood, buckthorn grows in Europe and North America.
Senna
Senna is a natural herbal laxative that promotes soft stools and encourages intestinal contraction to maintain healthy bowel movements and ensure proper waste elimination. Senna has also been used traditionally as a blood cleanser. Senna contains active substances that act as local irritants on the lining of the bowel, increasing fluid content and stimulating intestinal movement. Senna is commonly used to clear the bowels before medical tests such as a colonoscopy.
Psyllium Hulls
Psyllium hulls support gut health and aid elimination. An excellent source of soluble fiber, psyllium hulls absorb several times their weight in liquid, increasing intestinal bulk to ease the movement of digested food through the gut. Psyllium hulls fiber may also provide a feeling of fullness and help reduce food intake, enabling you to eat less while staying satisfied longer. Plus, psyllium hulls can play an important part in helping the body support cholesterol levels that are already within the normal range.
Licorice
Licorice has been a key part of many Chinese herbal formulas for thousands of years. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has relied on licorice root to provide respiratory, reproductive and digestive system support. Most Chinese herb combinations use licorice to balance the other herbs and to promote vitality. It has a reputation for helping the entire body maintain balance and for promoting well-being. Licorice root is also a popular herbal remedy for gastrointestinal and liver support, gently supporting peristalsis (wave-like muscle contractions that move food through the digestive tract) and overall digestion.
Rhubarb
Rhubarb root support healthy digestive and intestinal function. The roots are also used to support the liver and promote blood circulation to help detoxify the body. Rhubarb root contains natural compounds that can produce a laxative effect by increasing fluid levels in the intestines and stimulating bowel activity.
Barberry
Barberry has been used in traditional Indian medicine known as Ayurveda for over 2,500 years. Ayurveda employs barberry root's bitter properties to help improve appetite and digestive function, relieve upset stomach, soothe loose stools and intestinal distress, support liver function, and promote overall vigor. Barberry root is a natural source of berberine, which is believed to support gastric function and intestinal transit.
Ginger
Ginger has been used as both food and medicine in Asia for thousands of years. Traditionally, ginger has helped with a laundry list of complaints, including cold, fever, joint discomfort, aches, cramps, nervous system support, oral health, circulatory health, plus indigestion, gas, nausea and vomiting. Researchers have found that ginger may help settle the stomach during times of occasional nausea, motion sickness and morning sickness.
Slippery Elm
Slippery elm is a species of elm native to eastern North America. Slippery elm contains up to 50% mucilage, which supports delicate body tissues. When mixed with water, the soft, inner bark of the slippery elm tree becomes gel-like and soothing. Slippery elm has been used traditionally to support the digestive system and the mucosal lining of the gut. It also absorbs toxins from the bowel and helps maintain normal elimination. In the 1800s, Native Americans used slippery elm for a variety of benefits, including support for gastrointestinaI tract health to soothe intestinal tissues and for digestive and immune support.
Ingredients
Proprietary blend of extracts of Cascara sagrada bark, Senna leaves, Buckthorn bark, Alfalfa aerial parts, Psyllium seed hulls, Licorice root, Rhubarb root, Barberry bark, Ginger rhizome and Slippery elm bark in water and alcohol.
Quality
We work with experienced cultivators who have harvested Cascara sagrada by hand for generations. Wild–crafted and sustainably sourced in the Pacific northwest, our cascara is harvested each year from mid-May to August from trees between 10-20 years old. After harvest, the fresh cascara bark is ground into 3 to 4-inch sections and then kiln-dried to age to perfection (for proper efficacy and safety) before being ground again.
Cascara trees flourish along coastal regions between British Columbia and northern California. In fact, cascara trees naturally fill in logged off areas after timber companies cut down forests. The timber companies often replant with conifers, but Mother Nature does her own replanting with cascara to reestablish a more natural biodiversity as the forest regrows.
Recommended Use
Adults: Take 1 teaspoon (5 mL) once daily. Not for long-term use.
NOTE: This product contains cascara sagrada, buckthorn and senna. Read and follow recommendation carefully. Do not use if you have or develop diarrhea, loose stools or abdominal pain because cascara sagrada bark, buckthorn and senna may worsen these conditions and be harmful to your health. Consult your physician if you have frequent diarrhea, or if you are pregnant, nursing, taking medication, or have a medical condition.
